Umrah Guide

Step-by-Step Guide to Completing Umrah

Umrah is a beautiful act of worship, and this guide will take you through each step, from wearing the Ihram to completing the pilgrimage with ease.

1. Preparation and Intention (Niyyah)

Before departing for Umrah:

Perform Ghusl (full body purification).

Clip your nails and remove unwanted body hair.

Wear Ihram:

Men: Two unstitched white garments.

Women: Modest clothing covering the body, not necessarily white (no niqab or gloves).

Pray two units of Sunnah Salah.

Make the intention for Umrah:

Labbaik Umrah-tan

(O Allah, I respond to You by performing Umrah).

2. Entering the State of Ihram (Miqat)

Recite the Talbiyah as you enter the state of Ihram at the Miqat (boundary):

Transliteration:

Translation:

Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Verily, all praise, grace, and sovereignty belong to You. You have no partner.

Repeatedly recite this Talbiyah throughout your journey to Makkah.

3. Tawaf (Circumambulation of the Kaaba)

When you arrive at Masjid al-Haram, enter with your right foot and say:

اللّهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ

Allahumma iftah li abwaba rahmatika

(O Allah, open the doors of Your mercy for me).

Proceed to the Kaaba and begin Tawaf:

Tawaf is seven circuits (counterclockwise) around the Kaaba.

Start at the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad).

Raise your right hand or point to the Black Stone and say:

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ

Bismillah Allahu Akbar

(In the name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest).

During Tawaf:

Recite personal duas, dhikr, or the following supplication:

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina ‘adhab an-nar.

(Our Lord, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and save us from the punishment of the Fire).

After completing 7 circuits, go to Maqam Ibrahim (Station of Ibrahim) and pray 2 units of Salah if possible, reciting:

Surah Al-Fatihah (1st Rak’ah) and Surah Al-Kafirun (2nd Rak’ah).

4. Sa’i (Walking Between Safa and Marwah)

Proceed to Safa, face the Kaaba, and make the intention for Sa’i:

إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةَ مِنْ شَعَائِرِ اللَّهِ

Innas-Safa wal-Marwata min sha’a’irillah.

(Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah).

Begin walking between Safa and Marwah (7 trips):

From Safa to Marwah is 1 trip.

Recite this dua as you walk:

رَبِّ اغْفِرْ وَارْحَمْ إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الأَعَزُّ الأَكْرَمُ

Rabbighfir warham innaka anta al-‘azzu al-akram.

(My Lord, forgive and have mercy. Indeed, You are the Most Mighty, the Most Generous).

During the green lighted zone, men should jog (women walk as normal).

5. Shaving or Trimming Hair (Halq or Taqsir)

After completing Sa’i, end your Umrah by shaving (for men) or trimming (for men and women).

Shaving (Halq) is preferred for men as it symbolizes full submission.

Women should cut a small portion of hair (about an inch) evenly.

6. Exit Ihram

Once your hair is shaved or trimmed, your Umrah is complete, and you exit the state of Ihram.

Important Notes:

Maintain patience and humility throughout your journey.

Remember to pray for yourself, your loved ones, and the entire Ummah.

Follow all health and safety regulations at the holy sites.

May Allah accept your Umrah! Ameen.
